My recent shoot for “Island” feat model David Diaz.

During the course of shooting images for my monograph “The Boys Of Summer,” I met a model named David Diaz and he’s become a great addition to the line-up of men participating in my project. Recently, we also came together to collaborate on this series of dramatic figurative portraits for the popular male fashion blog Island. To see the layout and check out the blog, please follow the link below.

Questions/Comments

Remember, if you’re not on Tumblr, your questions and comments can also be submitted at uniqueportraitservices@yahoo.com. I hold on to them until I have several questions and then I format them together to save space on the blog. If you ask a question and I don’t answer right away, please be patient. As always, thank you for your interest.

Q: What is Robbie Gambrell like?

A: Robbie is a very nice guy. Professional, creative… extremely confident in front of the camera. A great model to work with.

Q: I’m sorry to say I was not aware of you until I read your interview on Lush Life with all of the beautiful photos. I am a HUGE fan now. All of your models are very handsome but If you take requests, I would like to see more of Roman and Chad PLEASE.

A: Thank you. Roman is one of my dearest friends. I try to shoot him as often as I can. He has an amazing face for portraits. I’m sure he will be popping up again in my work very soon. Here is a brand new shot of Chad and there will be others from a recent shoot. Keep an eye out.

Q: Les modèles sont très beaux. La photographie est géniale.

A: Merci. Thank you.

Q: Where do you find inspiration for your shoots?

A: I am most influenced by things I’ve seen in film, fashion and advertising. But I try not to copy anything. I take an idea of something, mold it and try to make it my own.

Q: Your pics of JC Arentzen in the athletic gear look like something out of a magazine. You need to do more color.

A: Thank you. It was a fun shoot. I actually used lights for those images which is something I don’t normally do. The majority of my work is black & white exterior portraits. I prefer the look of natural light. So, it took a minute to set the stage and get the lights right. And we had to keep spraying him with baby oil and water to keep that high-gleam shine on the skin which I think is absolutely imperative for color fitness shots like that. Color is more work- there is less room for error in the initial execution of the image. But it was fun to switch it up. I will probably be incorporating more color into my work as the months go on.

Q: Your website is wonderful. There is a photo in the landscape section of a distressed cottage on stilts. I believe it’s titled Cedar Key Honeymoon Cottage. That would make a great backdrop for one of your model shoots. Just an idea.

A: Thanks. Actually, that cottage is several hours from me. It’s located on the island of Cedar Key. I agree, it would make a dramatic backdrop for a shoot. Too bad it isn’t right around the corner. :)

As a photographer, I am authentically interested in creating a provocative or interesting image that tells a story. It doesn’t matter if I’m shooting a dilapidated farmhouse, a mother and child or a shirtless male model, I try my very best to create something beautiful and visual that does justice to the subject at hand.
